Air Source Heat Pump Maintenance

Regular maintenance of an air source heat pump is essential for ensuring its safety, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Longer service life and cleaner indoor air

Keep your air source heat pump running efficiently with regular maintenance

Air source heat pumps are often only serviced when they no longer operate as expected. However, a decline in energy efficiency may easily go unnoticed. Regular maintenance helps extend the service life of the unit, maintain efficient airflow, heating and cooling performance, improve safety, and ensure cleaner indoor air.

Annual maintenance is necessary when the indoor unit is located in an environment with a high level of airborne contaminants, such as a kitchen.

DIY air source heat pump maintenance

Can I maintain an air source heat pump myself?

It is also a good idea to carry out some basic maintenance tasks yourself. These include keeping the unit clean externally and cleaning the indoor unit’s air filters every few weeks. Remove the filters and vacuum them. If vacuuming does not remove all the dirt, the filters can also be washed using dishwashing detergent.

Please note: The filters must be completely dry before reinstalling them.

Leaves and other debris can also be carefully removed from the surface of the outdoor unit’s heat exchanger coil. Other maintenance tasks should be left to a qualified professional.

How often should an air source heat pump be serviced?

Basic maintenance should generally be carried out every 1–3 years, depending on the unit and its location. For example, if there are several pets in the household, annual maintenance may be necessary.

If the air source heat pump is not in continuous use, for example if it is used for cooling at a holiday home, the maintenance interval can generally be longer.

However, it is important to remember that household dust can accumulate in the condensate, which over time may create a breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, to help ensure good indoor air quality, we recommend having your air source heat pump professionally serviced regularly.
